Blue is hotter red is hottest. But the red is a more powerful coil than the blue.

You should be able to find either coil keep in mind the red coil has higher output than blue. A stock coil puts out about 17k volts and the blue coil is more than twice as strong as a stock coil. So maybe the mechanic was trying to make a few extra bucks.

Hope this clears everything up. If you have problems i would go back to the blue or even stock black coil. Anything watercooled i have ever seen has come witht he black coil.

The first number is the part number for this coil. You can however use such coils provided you remove the ballast resister. I have seen three colors of bosch coils.
